President Obama's Press Secretary tells us that a high percentage of Catholic women use birth control. He believes that somehow that statistic should silence critics of HHS mandate dealing with the government's requirement that certain "non-exempt" faith-based entities carry "free" insurance for contraceptive, sterilization, and abortion inducing drugs for their employees.
But, I ask, "So what?" Let Catholics work out their differences toward their church's policies among themselves. The government of the United States should not take sides and through laws make policies for them.
All of this chatter about who favors this or who favors that, along with who pays for what, simply diverts our attention away from the fundamental constitutional question before us. Just what did the framers of the First Amendment intend? Until now we have believed that the framers intended to keep the federal government out of the governance of churches and the entities they create to carry out their beliefs with it comes to caring for the poor, caring for the sick, and educating their children.
